What if I can't attend New Student Orientation on the days it's offered?

How do I know whether or not I need to take CEU's assessment test?
If a student has not taken a college placement test (ACT or SAT) in the three years prior to enrolling at CEU, he/she must take CEU's placement test called the ASSET. Advisors use these scores to make recommendations on which Math and English classes a student should enroll in. Contact CEU's Testing Center for more information.

Return to list of questions

Do I have to take the classes recommended by my advisor?
We strongly advise students to enroll in the Math and English classes recommended by their advisor. We want students to be successful; advisors are trained to interpret test scores, high school courses and grades, and the comfort level of the student so as to make accurate recommendations and thus better the chances of student success.

What is a CLEP test?

The exams are offered at the CEU Testing Center.

What is "Academic Advising"?
Academic advising is the process of assisting students in the identification and pursuit of academic or applied technology goals. Advisors help students select appropriate courses and class schedules to achieve those goals. Advisors also familiarize students with degree requirements, help students interpret test and placement scores, monitor student progress toward graduation, assist students with clarifying major and/or career options, and help students achieve their educational potential by helping them to understand themselves and to learn to use resources available on campus in order to reach their goals. Finally, advisors assist those students who plan to transfer and continue their education with taking appropriate courses and getting information on different colleges & universities.

How do I find out who my advisor is?
Students are assigned advisors based on their major field of study. If a student has declared a major, she/he is assigned a Faculty Advisor in that department. If a student is "undecided" or is just trying to complete the general education requirements for an Associate Degree without "majoring" in anything, he/she is advised through the Center for Academic Advisement located in the Student Center.

What is a Major?
A specialized program of study that a student chooses to pursue, which focuses on a particular field such as accounting, elementary education, mathematics, etc.

Return to list of questions

What if I do not have a Major?
If a student does not have a major, we recommend the student enroll in general education courses and begin working towards an Associate Degree. The student will be advised through the Center for Academic Advisement until she/he declares a major at which point the student will be referred to a Faculty Advisor in his/her major field of study.

Students need to average approximately 16 credit per semester to complete the requirements for an Associate Degree in two years. Students must complete a minimum of 63 credit hours of courses numbered "1000" or above to graduate from CEU.

Return to list of questions

What is a "preparatory" or "developmental" course?

How do I add or drop a class?
Meet with your academic advisor and fill out an add/drop slip. Depending on the date at which you decide to add or drop a class, the instructor may or may not have to sign the add/drop slip. After receiving all appropriate signatures, the slip must be turned into the Admissions Office.

A student must have a minimum of 2.0(C) Grade Point Average to remain in good standing and graduate from CEU.

Return to list of questions

What does the grade "E" represent?
A failing grade.

Return to list of questions

What is an "Incomplete" or "I" grade?
An incomplete grade "I" may be given by an instructor only when a student is unable to complete class work because of illness or other legitimate reason and, in the opinion of the instructor, the student can complete the necessary course requirements without reregistering for the course. The student has one semester (not including summer) to make up the incomplete grade.

Return to list of questions

What happens when I repeat a course to get a better grade?
A student may repeat any course and have only the highest grade received used in the computation of their GPA. However, the student must submit a formal request, obtained at the Admissions Office, to have their transcript reviewed and GPA adjusted. The lower grade will remain on the transcript, but the transcript will show that the course has been repeated and the higher grade figured into the GPA.

Attend all classes, enroll in SLSC 1050 College Success Skills (a course designed to help students improve their skills in reading, note taking, test taking, memory, time management, etc.), use tutoring labs on campus, and/or meet with an academic advisor to discuss problems that affect academic performance.
